Mike Axe Climbs Kilimanjaro 13/04/2011
In December 2009 Mike attempted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro but made the mistake of choosing the 5 day Marenga route, which was the shortest but the lowest success rate, 45%, for reaching the summit. As he was unsuccessful he then decided to return in August 2010, and this time he followed the 8 day Lemosho route with a 95% success rate. The temperatures were well below zero, as the ice on his tent proved, but the scenery more than made up for the freezing temperatures.
After leaving base camp at midnight, mountain sickness hit at about 5200m, but Mike reached the crater rim, 5600m, just after daybreak. He climbed the final 200m to reach the summit at 5895m at about 8.30am - well done Mike!
