When did you realise your interest in engineering?
I first realised my interest in engineering when I was about 13 years old. We had to pick our options at school, and I decided to study Product Design. I thought I would enjoy the practical element of the syllabus, and I certainly did, from that point on, I was hooked.

What made you think of joining the Ford Aerospace Apprenticeship Academy? 
I read an article about the Ford Aerospace Apprenticeship Academy, which described what it was all about. At the time, I was sure what I wanted to specialise in, so I especially liked that it was at college and covered a range of engineering skills.

Looking back, can you remember what you enjoyed most about your role as an apprentice within the company?
I really liked that we were working with raw materials, and you got to see the processes all the way through to the finished product. Everyone has a role to play and the fact that I contributed to making parts that can be used in a wealth of industries made me so proud.

How has your role changed over the years?
After my apprenticeship, I secured a fulltime role with the company and decided to specialise in quality.  I also continued to train and become a quality inspector in xxx. I recently became quality team leader, so I’m responsible for managing the whole inspection team. While quality is a company-wide responsibly, it is my department’s role to manage this area and ensure everything is to exacting standards. I also support production by troubleshooting on any potential issues and advising operators on specific quality techniques.

What would you say to anyone thinking about enrolling on a Ford Aerospace Academy pre-apprenticeship programme?
If anyone is interested in a pursuing a career in manufacturing or engineering, I say go for it, you won’t be disappointed! I started my career with the Ford Aerospace Apprenticeship Academy. A great way to learn new skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification, it was the perfect route for me.

When you first started your apprenticeship, you were asked ‘where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time’ can you remember your response to this question?  
Absolutely! I said, I would like to be fully qualified engineer working in the CNC Milling department or possibly even a team leader at Ford. This company helps people to achieve their dreams by investing in them and I’m so proud of everything I have achieved. Our apprenticeship academy plays a crucial role in helping to training the next generation and I can say from first-hand experience just how good we are at it!
