Solid shims are suitable for open tolerance applications. Widely used to adjust clearances to obtain the desired design efficiency between moving parts. They are suitable for aligning parallel and angular surfaces. They can also be used where interfacing elements must be coupled and to compensate for wear. Shim sets are produced by stacking individual shims in various thicknesses to achieve the desired overall thickness required.

A solid shim is the term usually applied to a spacer. Manufactured to a precise thickness for immediate installation. Alternatively, where the thickness cannot be accurately determined it may be machined or ground to size on site.
